Marjorie Wise, On the technique of manuscript writing, Patty Smith Hill, intro page vii Introduction Here is a book on English manuscript writing, written by an English woman who specialized in the teaching of this art in her native land before coming to this country in 1921 to study American methods of education. Many American teachers have watched England’s experiments in this field with keen interest, some introducing this type of writing in some of our private schools. Others have been waiting for an opportunity to study and acquire the technique of this art from someone well versed in its practice. In Miss Wise we have one who can turn over to us the results of her experience in the country in which the art originated. For this reason it was decided to utilize her service as a teacher during her study as a graduate student in Teachers College, in order to introduce the English manuscript writing to the children and teachers in the lower grades of the Horace Mann and Lincoln Schools. While these experiments in the new writing are still in progress and no definite conclusions drawn from statistical studies yet ready for publication, the results have been most satisfactory to both parents and teachers who have been impressed by the beauty, the legibility, and the ease with which young children acquire this script when compared with their acquisition of the ordinary running hand. Until the results of these and other experiments in this country are completed one cannot speak with authority with regard to speed, which is still the most doubtful problem involved in its introduction. While our experiments and others are going forward, England has much to tell us regarding her experiments and records with both younger and older children.
