Dear Sir: I beg that
you, yourself, will give this
note your candid consideration.
The office of Brigadier
General has become vacant
by the treason of Gen. Twiggs.
Col. Sumner is an applicant
for the post. I too having
been educated at West Point,
and having served faithfully
for thirty three years,
presume to apply to you
