From Port Royal.
The Charleston Mercuryv has the following account
of a recent break with the
enemy, in which a South
Carolina battery was engaged.
Gardener's Corner Via Picataligo Dec. 19.
About 1/2 past 1 oclock yesterday
afternoon, one of the enemies
gun boats passed by Port Royal
Ferry. Our batteries opened fire
upon her, striking her, three
times. Upon meeting with
this rather hot reception,
She steamed rapidly past, and
ran aground about three
miles on the other side of the
Ferry. As soon as our troops
became aware of the fix in
which the Yankees had got
themselves, St. Mc Ilhenny of
Capt Moore's field battery (from


to a point just opposite to
the Shoal in which the gun
boat was aground. In the
meantime, three flats crowded
with the enemy's Troops had mo-
ved from the opposite shore,
under a a sharp fire from one of
their batteries directed against
our troops on the main. At
that point our force consisted
of Capt Mc Ilhenny's Battery ar-
rived just as the flats had come
out about midway of the Stream
He immediately opened fire
upon them with tremendious
effect. One of the flats was soon
Sunk and our fire Created
terrible havoc among the Sol-
diers on the other two flats,
which hastily put back, Night
Came on and ended the Cannonade
The enemy's loss among the
men on the flats must have been very
heavy--Concluded on 4th Page.
