- Description
-
This small piece of paper may have been given as a sample to advertise his writing; it may have been enclosed as a keepsake; or it may have been cut from a larger piece of paper by a collector.
- Physical Description [ADDED]
- Description of Social and Historical Context [ADDED]
- Penmen like Platt Rogers Spencer used samples of their writing as a form of advertising to encourage people to attend classes in which the student could be instructed. As many penmen were itinerant, or traveling often, they needed to advertise when they came to a new town so that they could gain enough students quickly for a profitable class that could be three lessons, six lessons, or could last several weeks. Day and night classes were not uncommon in larger towns.
- Short sayings and poems were common. While this exact poem has not been located in work by other writers, a few of these lines are in books by other penmen and students in years before and after Spencer uses them here.
- By the time this piece was written, 1856, Platt Rogers Spencer had already gained considerable attention for his penmanship.
