William Putnam, Detraction. Knowledge.
DETRACTION.
There is a Lust in man no Charm can tame
Of loudly publishing his Neighbour's shame
On Eagles Wings immortal scandals fly
While virtuous Actions are but born & die
Knowledge.
Merit should be forever plac'd
In Knowledge Judgment Wit & Taste;
For these tis own'd without dispute,
Alone distinguish Man from Brute
